Juveniles Confess to ArsonThe boys, whose names cannot be released due to their ages, have been charged with misdemeanors for violating sheriff’s notices concerning public safety. The boys, along with their parents, claimed to have put the fire out when they had left the campsite by smothering it with pine needles. Instead it smoldered after they had left.
The fire had started from a campfire, although signs had been posted saying campfires were illegal in that area. “I’m glad we got this cleared up. I believe that our investigation would have eventually produced those who started this fire. Now we don’t have to go through all of that” said Sheriff Hubert.
Firemen from several states were at the scene to fight the blaze. The estimated damage was three point five million dollars, according to the Ticonderoga County sheriff department.
An estimated 25 people came from out side of the area to help put out of the fire. “This is the worst fire we’ve had in this county in more than a decade. We appreciate the fine work of own fire departments in this county in putting out this blaze and the help we received from our neighbors” said Sheriff Billy Hubert.
The fire burned tree, land, and other parts of the county from two miles east of Highway 14 to the edge of the Ponderosa Valley subdivision, across the southern part of the county. The boys have been released to the custody of their parents, and the hearing in juvenile court is to be held in two weeks from today.
